Following Moore-Led Effort, IRS Extends Filing Deadline for Hurricane Helene Victims

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Tim Moore (NC-14) applauded the Internal Revenue Service’s decision to extend tax filing and payment deadlines for individuals and businesses across North Carolina impacted by Hurricane Helene. The announcement comes less than two weeks after Congressman Moore led the entire North Carolina Congressional Delegation in a bipartisan letter urging the IRS to grant additional time for storm recovery.

Sent on April 3rd, Congressman Moore and the full delegation asked the IRS to move the deadline from May 1 to September 25, 2025, citing ongoing hardships caused by the storm’s devastation and delays in disaster relief distribution.

“The people of North Carolina are resilient, but they need time to rebuild,” said Congressman Moore. “I’m grateful that Acting IRS Commissioner Melanie Krause and the Trump Administration are willing to work with us to give families and small businesses a fair shot at getting back on solid ground before worrying about tax deadlines. This extension is the right call, and I’ll keep working to make sure our communities get the full support they deserve.” 

Under the updated IRS guidance, individuals, businesses, and tax-exempt organizations in all North Carolina counties will now have until September 25, 2025, to file and pay taxes originally due between September 25, 2024, and September 25, 2025. This includes income tax returns, estimated payments, and payroll filings, among others.
