Congressman Tim Moore Leads North Carolina Delegation Urging IRS to Extend Tax Filing Deadline for Hurricane Helene Victims

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Recently, Congressman Tim Moore (NC-14) led the entire North Carolina Congressional Delegation in calling on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to extend the current tax filing deadline for victims of Hurricane Helene from May 1 to September 25, 2025. In a letter to the IRS, the bipartisan group of lawmakers urged additional time for individuals and small businesses still struggling to recover from the storm’s devastation.

“While the hurricane occurred months ago, businesses are still grappling with billions of dollars in damages. Many of these businesses suffered total losses and did not have adequate insurance coverage, as Western North Carolina does not routinely see natural disasters as damaging as Hurricane Helene,” the lawmakers wrote. “In addition to the unprecedented damage caused by the hurricane, various grants, loans, and other forms of relief were delayed, leaving many businesses and individuals waiting months to receive the appropriate disaster assistance.”

The lawmakers continued, “Due to a combination of these factors, we believe it is appropriate for the IRS to further extend the filing deadline for Hurricane Helene victims. Not doing so will only burden individuals and businesses who are grappling with one of the worst natural disasters in North Carolina history. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

The letter is signed by both Senators Thom Tillis and Ted Budd, as well as Reps. Don Davis (NC-01), Deborah K. Ross (NC-02), Gregory F. Murphy, M.D. (NC-03), Valerie P. Foushee (NC-04), Virginia Foxx (NC-05), Addison McDowell (NC-06), David Rouzer (NC-07), Mark Harris (NC-08), Richard Hudson (NC-09), Pat Harrigan (NC-10), Chuck Edwards (NC-11), Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12), and Brad Knott (NC-13).
